NISQUALLY EARTHQUAKE OF 28 FEBRUARY 2001 DAMAGE TO THE STARBUCKS INTERNATIONAL HEADQUARTERS BUILDING formerly SEARS AND ROEBUCK WAREHOUSE AND STORE (ca. 1925)
Photographs by Randolph Langenbach, April, 2001
CLICK ON EACH PHOTO TO ENLARGE The Starbucks headquarters was seismically retrofitted prior to the earthquake, as can be seen by the braced frames in the interior photos. However, the exterior skin was not altered at the time of the structural retrofit. The internal structure of the building was not damaged, but the skin was.
17) The hairline scratches in the beam above the braces are attributed to the heat generated from the stresses in the web of the steel beam during the earthquake. |
