BACHAU suffered the greatest damage of all of the larger towns in Gujarat. Almost all of it buildings were collapsed or damaged beyond repair, and approximately 1/4 of is population was killed in the disaster.
5-6) Views of a shopping center in the center of Bachau. This damage was typical of its entire main commercial street. Most buildings were of reinforced concrete.
7) It seemed ironic to see this young shopkeeper sweeping the floor slab of what had been his shop to prepare it for setting up and reopening for business on the same location.
8-9) The barber shop was the first shop to re-open on the main street of Bachau. They were needed in particular to shave the heads of survivors who lost family members - a Hindu ritual.
10) An unidentified worker waiting to return home after working on the daunting task of moving the rubble.
